ROOT CANALS
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a dental procedure performed to repair and preserve a decayed or infected tooth.
How Does It Work?
The root canal process involves removing the damaged area of the tooth, specifically the nerve tissue (also known as the pulp), and disinfecting the affected area. Once it is thoroughly cleaned, the inside of the tooth is filled and sealed. Leaving the nerve infected by bacteria can lead to pain, swelling, infection, or even an abscessed tooth.
How Do I Know If I Need a Root Canal?
While symptoms may not always be present, you might experience one or more of the following signs:
- Intense toothache pain when chewing
- Increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Tooth discoloration
- Swelling of the gums in the affected area
- Recurring pimple on the gums
How Painful Is a Root Canal?
There is a common misconception that root canals are extremely painful. However, thanks to modern technology, root canal treatment is generally no more painful than having a dental filling placed.
